Backup Anomaly Detection

Explore the essential features of Backup Anomaly Detection with SimpleBackups. Learn how our innovative Moving Average Deviation method tracks backup sizes to alert you of significant changes, ensuring timely interventions for data integrity

Overview

The Backup Anomaly Detection feature in SimpleBackups provides a robust mechanism to monitor and alert on significant changes in the size of your backups. This feature uses a statistical method known as Moving Average Deviation to track and analyze the sizes of your backups over time, ensuring that you are promptly notified of any anomalies that could indicate potential issues with your backup processes.

How It Works

Moving Average Calculation

Each time a backup is completed, SimpleBackups calculates the new average size based on the most recent backup sizes. This average is not static but updates dynamically as new backups are made, incorporating the latest data while phasing out the oldest data in the calculation. This method provides a more accurate and current understanding of what is typical for your backups.

Deviation Detection

Once the moving average is established, the system then compares the size of each new backup against this average. The difference between the size of the current backup and the moving average is referred to as the deviation. Our system monitors this deviation to identify significant changes from what is considered normal for your backups.

Alert Triggers

An alert is triggered when the deviation exceeds a predetermined threshold that indicates a significant change from the norm. This threshold is carefully set to avoid false alarms from minor fluctuations, ensuring that you only receive alerts when potentially significant issues are detected.

Benefits

  • Timely Notifications: Receive alerts soon after significant deviations are detected, allowing for quick intervention.
  • Reduced Noise: By focusing on significant deviations rather than every small fluctuation, you receive fewer, more meaningful alerts.

Setting Up Backup Anomaly Detection

To enable and configure Backup Anomaly Detection for your backups in SimpleBackups:

  1. Navigate to your Dashboard.
  1. Find the “Projects & Controls” section
  1. Set your preferences by enabling “Anomaly Detection”

FAQs

Q: What should I do if I receive an anomaly detection alert?

A: Review the reported backup and compare it against recent backup sizes. Check for any intentional changes or consult the backup logs to investigate any discrepancies.

Q: Can I adjust the sensitivity of the anomaly detection?

A: Not at this time, however, we aim to use preset thresholds that work for the majority of our users.
